THE CAUSES EFFECTS AND REMEDIES OF ORGANISATION CONFLICTS IN NIGERIA TEACHING HOSPITAL. [A CAUSE STUDY OF UNIVERSITY OF NIGERIA TEACHING HOSPITAL ([UNTH) ENUGU]

CHAPTER ONE

1.1            BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

The role of efficient management in human health and development cannot be over emphasized. Number R.E (1982) has stressed the need to evolve good management practices in health care delivery inNigeria. The federal, state and local governments are all committed at least in principles to the goal foe achieving good health for all citizens by the year 2006.

     InNigeriahealth sector, different categories of hospitals, the general hospital, the federal medical centers, special hospitals, teaching hospitals and other medical institutions like the non-governmental or private hospitals. Currently there are teaching hospitals in almost every state of the federation. The activities of these teaching hospitals can broadly be classified into three: training, services and research. In order to carry out these three activities teaching hospital work in collaboration with the federal ministry, the hospital board and the teaching hospital, four main categories of staff are usually available and these are medical staff or doctors, the Para-medical staff, the scientists and the support staff, that is those who are concerned with providing basic facilities such as space administrative support, engineering, and maintenance workers ensure continuous and effective delivery of hospital services.

     In spite of the above framework, poor management has been identified as one of the problems militating against efficient health services inNigeria(Abuja Health Summit, 1995). This is also the case in other countries are usually faced with management problems (Stoner and worked 1986) because of the conflict management is an important aspect of health policy management inNigeria(UNTH annual bulletin, 1997)

1.2                 STATEMENT OF PROBLEM

One of the basic management problems in hospitals has been external or land internal conflict. Thus, the enduring challenge for hospital management is how to carry out effective administration in this special environment so as to maximize efficiency and minimize waste. The incidence of conflict in hospitals necessitate a proper investigation into the organizational framework and functions of the Nigerian hospitals are points of focus.

The pertinent questions are:

a)     Which are the common causes of conflict in UNTH?

b)    What type of conflict is experienced in UNTH?

c)     Which type of conflict gives the highest functional or dysfunctional result?

d)    What is the impact of conflict on the efficiency of UNTH?

e)     What appropriate methods or means can be used to manage conflict in UNTH?

1.3            PROBLEM THAT THE STUDY WILL BE CONCENTRATED WITH OR RESEARCH HYPOTHESIS

The research formulated the following null hypothesis:

1. The incidence of conflict in UNTH is a function of any of these factors.

i)    Clash between individual’s goals and organizational goals.

ii)   Limited amount or scarcity of resources

iii)  Interdependence of works activities

iv)  Differences in individual values and perceptions

v)  Organizational ambiguity

vi)  Individual life style

 2. Negative effect of conflict resolution method applied in UNTH exceeds its positive effects on the organizational performance.

1.4         IMPORTANCE OR SIGNIFICANCE OF STUDY       

The study shall benefit the following:

a)  The student researcher in finding ready materials

b)  Nigeria Teaching Hospital especially UNTH in accessing the feeling of the people.

c)   Various health institutions in examining the types, nature, causes of organizational conflicts a view to determine its impact on efficiency.

d)  The management, heads of department and units, union leaders and some levels of senior in understanding the appropriate methods or measures that can be used to manage conflict.

1.5            DEFINITION OF IMPORTANT TERMS

Some important terms which are used in the cause of this work includes; Background, Statement, Hypothesis and Significance.

BACKGROUND

This means the circumstances, facts or events that influence, cause or explain something. In this case, the background of the study includes all relevant circumstances that affects the cause of study, i.e. the background information of the study.

STATEMENT

     According to the dictionary, a statement means something that is stated e.g.  the chairman is expected to make a public statement about the company’s plans. In this study, we can understand that statement is a formal account of facts, views, problems, e.t.c.; a report  on an issue. For instance, the problem of the study is stated above.

 HYPOTHESIS

     This is an idea or a suggestion that is based on known facts and is used as a basis for reasoning or further investigation. It equally means the problem that the study will be concentrated with.

SIGNIFICANCE

     As the word indicates, means importance or relevance of something. So as being used in this work, it implies the importance of studying the subject area.
